It’s no secret that I love all things food + fitness. So today I’m combining the two!
Let’s start with the food part.
Because when the food part is a chocolate shake obviously you start there.
Oftentimes eating a full meal right after a workout isn’t the most appealing thing. Tough exercise can somewhat mute the appetite for a little while; perhaps you’ve experienced that? However, research shows that eating healthy carbs + protein within the 30 minutes following your workout is actually important for replenishing the glucose in your muscles and for building lean muscle!
For many people, drinkable foods are easier to have an appetite for post-workout. So shakes/smoothies are a happy compromise to get the nutrients your body needs! Hence, this recipe of smooth, chocolatey goodness.
Really though, anything creamy and chocolatey is easy to have an appetite for pretty much any time of day. Post-workout or post-sitting-on-the-couch-watching-Friends-reruns.
This chocolate protein shake is a great way to refuel your worked-out body, but it can also be a great secretly nutritious dessert or mid-day snack! Plus it can be thrown together in just a couple minutes with only 6 ingredients total for both the shake + sauce. Simple recipes are my favorites.
What makes this shake even more delicious is the chocolate sauce drizzle. So easy to make with only 3 ingredients, but it adds that extra layer of flavor for a completely dreamy shake! I’m all about a good sauce drizzle.
There’s a secret to the chocolate sauce though. You MUST drizzle some down the sides of the jar before adding the chocolate shake. This step is absolutely necessary. Trust me. You want that saucy goodness to be with each spoonful, and drizzling it down the sides ensures that.
The one bad thing I discovered about this shake is that it was gone too quickly. But that’s probably just eater’s error. When a food is so yummy it’s hard not to scarf it down!
Now that we’ve talked about the food, let’s talk about the fitness!
I recently had the opportunity to try out Lumoid’s fitness tracker rental program, which is such a neat concept! You get to choose 3 items from their wearable tech selection, try them out at home for 2 weeks to get a feel for which ones you like (or don’t like), and then either purchase the one you fell in love with or return all 3 if you didn’t find your fitness tracker soulmate!
I’ve been a pretty devoted Polar girl for the past few years when it comes to tracking my workouts, and as for everyday activity tracking I really love the Fitbit Charge HR my sweet hubby gave me this past Christmas.
I think fitness data is just so fascinating (proud to be an exercise nerd), so I was kind of excited for the chance to try out fitness trackers different than the ones I already own!
Confession: I actually own 5 fitness trackers…but 2 are super out-of-date dinosaur ones, so those don’t really count.
While I didn’t find a new fitness tracker soulmate in the 3 I picked for my 2 week Lumoid rental experience, I did get a more solid grasp on what traits are important to me in my workout wearables. And I think that itself has a lot of value! My Lumoid experience helped me come to the conclusion that I already own and use the 2 trackers that currently work best for me. It would have cost WAY too much to purchase all 3 trackers and made me WAY too frustrated trying to figure out how to return all 3 after deciding they weren’t for me.
So high-five to Lumoid! An intelligent rent + buy/return concept that I kind of wish I’d had the brilliance to think up first…

Well. Now that we’ve discussed food + fitness, let’s go back to food and finish with the recipe! Always food.
- 2 small (~160g total) bananas, pre-sliced and frozen
- 1 serving (~22g) vegan protein powder*
- ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract
- ½ Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1-2 tsp water
- ¼ tsp agave
- In a small bowl, stir together all ingredients for the chocolate sauce. Set aside.
- Add all chocolate shake ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. This may take a few minutes. Finish blending on medium-high for about 20 seconds to make the shake extra fluffy.
- Drizzle a few spoonfuls of the chocolate sauce down the sides of your serving jar/glass. Pour in the chocolate shake and drizzle the remaining chocolate sauce on top. Serve immediately.
